Results from our Latest Public Opinion Survey | Monday, July 25, 2011

You might recall that during the summer of 2010 Yukon Energy hired a firm to conduct a series of phone and on-line opinion surveys for us. The purpose of the surveys was to get a sense of what the general Yukon public and local business and community leaders know and believe about the Corporation. The information gathered assisted us in developing a public information campaign aimed at helping Yukoners better understand who Yukon Energy is, what we are working to achieve, and why.

In early 2011, after carrying out one phase of the public information campaign, we did a follow up survey to see if the public's knowledge about Yukon Energy had changed. The results of the earlier survey can be found here and here, and the latest survey results are here.

Yukon Energy recognizes the importance of providing you with on-going information about our projects and the steps we are taking to provide Yukoners with electricity that is clean, reliable, environmentally responsible, and flexible enough to meet the changing needs of the territory. This blog is just one of a number of methods we are using to try to meet our goal. If you have suggestions about how this blog can be improved, or ideas for other ways of providing you with the information you want and need, please let us know.

Seeking a Career Move? | Thursday, June 2, 2011

Over the last several months Yukon Energy has devoted a great deal of time and effort to planning for a territory-wide energy conservation program. Comments at our energy charrette in March and on recent surveys indicate that many members of the public want Yukon Energy to make energy conservation a top priority, and we are carrying out your wishes in that regard.

To help with the growing workload in this area we are hiring an Energy Conservation Manager. This person will work closely with the President & CEO to lead energy conservation initiatives.

We are looking for someone with:
• a post secondary education in a related field;
• experience in developing and implementing related programs; and
• strong communication skills with the ability to promote energy conservation initiatives.

If you're interested in the job, or you know someone who might be, please visit our website to find the full job description and details about how to apply for the position.

Feathered Friends Offer Lesson in Energy Conservation | Friday, May 13, 2011

We humans probably weren't the only ones surprised by the unseasonable dump of snow we received over the last couple of days. The migrating birds must be shaking their heads as well. Here's the sight that greeted us this morning as we entered our Whitehorse office building.

These sparrows are good energy conservation ambassadors. In the photo to the far right, see how they're using every bit of shared body heat to stay warm.

Learning from the Next Generation | Monday, February 21, 2011

We've written a few times on this blog about the upcoming energy charrette, planned for March 7 - 9 in Whitehorse. Ahead of that, we're holding a series of public meetings, the second of which is taking place in Mayo tomorrow night from 7 - 9 p.m. at the community hall.

One of the things we are very excited about regarding the charrette is that an entire class of grade 11 experiential science students will participate. On Friday, Yukon Energy President David Morrison and Stuart Hickox of One Change spent an afternoon at the school, giving the students some background about the Corporation, about energy in the territory, and about just how important the students' views are in this planning process. Some of the students will be writing about their charrette experience on this blog, and we are very much looking foward to their insights.  Photo credit: Mike Thomas.

Trades and Technologies: Our Bread and Butter | Friday, February 18, 2011

Skills Canada Yukon is planning another territorial skills competition this April in Whitehorse. As in the past, Yukon Energy will be involved in this event. We think it's an important one for a whole lot of reasons.

Trades and technolgies are absolutely crucial to our business. That's why, in 2006, we started an apprenticeship program for Yukon Energy. It was a way of addressing the shortage of skilled workers in Canada and the challenge of attracting qualified candidates to the North. Perhaps more importantly, it gave us a chance to offer trades training and employment to Yukoners.

Since that time, about a dozen Yukoners have gone through our apprenticeship program in the areas of power systems electrician, powerline technician, and heavy duty equipment technician. Almost all of them continue to work for us now that they have their journey tickets. Two more are in the process of getting their tickets.

We also created a new scholarship a few years ago that was open to Yukon residents entering a trade pre-apprenticeship program or entry level trades program in the following areas:

electrician
powerline technician
electronics technician
heavy duty mechanic
industrial instrument mechanic
millwright (industrial mechanic)
machinist
You can learn more about our scholarship program by going to our website.

We're really looking forward to this year's territorial skills competition, taking place on April 29th at the Whitehorse campus of Yukon College. What's most exciting for us to to have the chance to show young people what can be achieved through trades and technologies. If you're a young person or know someone who is, spread the word. Hope to see you on April 29th. Photo credit: www.archbould.com
