Walking the Talk | Wednesday, January 25, 2012
As demand for electricity continues to grow in Yukon, we have been promoting energy conservation and efficiencies. We have encouraged all Yukoners to be conscious of how much power they are using, and to conserve where possible.
But of course we need to walk the talk, so we’ve just had our own internal energy audit done. We hired an independent firm to conduct an audit of our Whitehorse office, Whitehorse diesel and hydro plants, Dawson office, and Dawson diesel plant.
Before the audit was done we compiled all of our electricity and fuel usage on a monthly basis for each building, along with information about building envelope, floor area and occupancy, lighting, heating and cooling, control systems and process loads (i.e. block heaters for the diesels, fuel tank heating, spillway gate heating, etc.) The auditors then conducted site visits and measured things such as heat loss from the buildings, lighting levels, heating system performance and system operation.
We expect to receive the completed report shortly and then will take some time to review it with an eye to the costs and energy savings of making certain modifications to our facilities. Next we would implement various measures. Stay tuned for updates very soon about how Yukon Energy will conserve electricity.

The Future of Power | Friday, December 2, 2011
Earlier this year, a grade 11 class from Wood Street School in Whitehorse participated in a three-day energy charrette we held in the city. The students were articulate, engaged, and ended up leading a number of the discussion groups or being guest bloggers on this site.
Several months later, Simone Kitchen of the Kitchen-Kuiack family that is taking part in the National Energy Diet Challenge has gone back to Wood Street School to talk energy with another class. We thought you might enjoy watching the video she produced of her class visit.

Campfire Chat: Energy Saving Tips | Thursday, November 17, 2011
The Kitchen-Kuiack family from Marsh Lake, Yukon is into their final few weeks of the nation-wide Energy Diet Challenge. They admit they've learned a lot, and have passed on much of what they've learned to others through their blog.
In their latest installment, they took the opportunity at an old fashioned hotdog roast to gather some energy saving tips from other Yukoners.
Do you have a tip you'd like to share? We'd love it if you would post it here.

What Should a Made in Yukon Energy Conservation Plan Look Like? | Thursday, November 10, 2011
You might recall that earlier this year, Yukon Energy teamed up with the Yukon Electrical Company Ltd. and the Yukon government’s Department of Energy, Mines & Resources to collect information about how people use electricity in the territory and where the greatest gains might be in terms energy conservation or efficiencies.
We hired ICF Marbek to do what's called a Conservation Potential Review. Marbek is one of Canada’s top energy consulting firms.
Over the past several months, the company has been gathering information to answer the following questions:
• How do Yukoners currently use energy (i.e. what percentage of energy consumption goes towards heat, hot water, lighting, plug loads, etc.)?
• How much power would Yukon need in future years if there weren't any energy conservation/efficiency initiatives put in place?
• How much potential is there in Yukon for energy savings through energy conservation initiatives?
• Where are the greatest gains to be made in terms of energy conservation?
The consultants have been gathering the information using customer billing data, stakeholder consultation and customer surveys. They’ve processed all the collected data and are now ready to start discussing their findings with Yukoners.
Marbek is coming to Yukon for two-and-a-half days of workshops next week in Whitehorse with various stakeholders. The workshops will allow participants to talk about how much of the electricity savings identified in the draft study can realistically be achieved within Yukon’s residential, commercial and renewable sectors between now and 2030.
Marbek will take the feedback it receives during these workshops and use it to further refine its report. The final version of the report will be available to everyone as soon as it is completed.

The Energy Diet Challenge | Monday, September 12, 2011

The Kitchen/Kuiack household from the Marsh Lake area is setting an example for all of us. They are taking on the Energy Diet Challenge, an initiative set up by Shell Canada and Canadian Geographic. They are one of six families from across Canada going head to head to see how much energy they can save over the next three months. At stake are some great prizes, including a new hybrid car, and more importantly, a cleaner environment.
We encourage you to follow their blog, and send them words of encouragement. Perhaps you have some tips you'd like to pass along to them.
You might also consider going on an energy diet of your own. If you do, please tell us about your challenges and triumphs through this blog or through our Facebook page.
