Explaining the Mayo Lake Enhanced Storage Project | Thursday, June 16, 2011
As you are aware if you read this blog regularly, Yukon Energy's goal is to ensure that any new projects we undertake produce
energy that is reliable, affordable, environmentally responsible, and flexible enough to meet the changing needs of the territory.
Projects that enhance our existing hydro facilities reflect these principles, since they displace non-renewable energy sources such as diesel without requiring as large a footprint as initiatives such as new dams. That's why we are considering an idea we call the Mayo Lake Enhanced Storage Project.
We are proposing that we be allowed to lower the current licensed minimum level for the lake by up to one metre. This would give us additional water that we would use to displace diesel generation. This newsletter provides more details (as well as giving an update on our Mayo B project). Once you've had a chance to read the newsletter, we welcome your questions or comments.
There is a community dinner and open house scheduled for Wednesday June 22nd to provide more information to the public. It's taking place at the curling rink lounge in Mayo. A meal will be served between 6 and 7 p.m., with a presentation and discussion from 7 to 9 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Power Outage in Keno | Wednesday, June 15, 2011
Three power poles that fell to the ground in a swampy area were the cause of a recent power outage at the Bellekeno mine and mill, and in Keno City. Power went out on Sunday evening and was restored late yesterday afternoon. The outage was lengthy because it was necessary to build a road into the site to make the repairs.
Yukon Energy apologizes to Keno residents and to the Bellekeno mine for the disruption in service.

The Fish Cam Is Back! | Friday, June 10, 2011
Now that our Whitehorse Rapids Fishway is opened for another season, we have re-activated our salmon cam. At this time of the year the water is still murky. However in a week or so you should be able to much more clearly see the various freshwater fish that travel through the ladder. Expect the salmon to return to the ladder in August.

Good Progress at Mayo B | Friday, June 10, 2011
Work continues to proceed on time and on budget at our Mayo B site. Here are a few images taken this week.
Inside the penstock; the pipe that will be buried underground and will carry water from Wareham Lake to the new powerhouse.
The scroll cases in the powerhouse. These move water from the penstock to the turbine blades.
The water hits the blades and then flows back out into the river.

A closer look at one of the scroll cases. The silver metal parts you see are called wicket gates
and control the flow of water to the turbines.

Air Emissions | Tuesday, June 7, 2011
As a result of the shutdown of our Aishihik plant for a few weeks, and the subsequent need to burn more diesel than is normal, we have received a number of questions about air quality. Yukon Energy does have an air emission permit that we must abide by, and the emissions from our Whitehorse diesel plant remain well within the limits of our permit. Our air emissions permit, and the detailed permit application, can be found on our website. Please note that the application is a large file (7 MB) and may take some time to download.

Another Sign of Summer: The Opening of the Fishladder | Wednesday, June 1, 2011
Yukon Energy's Whitehorse Rapids fishladder is open for the season. This facility has become one of the city's most popular destinations for visitors and locals alike. Here's what's great about a visit to the ladder:
- It gives you a chance to see local freshwater fish (all summer) and Chinook salmon (August) travel through the ladder
- You can get up close and personal with the fish in our aquariums
- You can use our high powered microscope to age fish by counting the rings on their scales (like rings on a tree trunk)
- You can check out our underwater camera system and our ‘salmon cam’ that allows viewing of the fish from a home computer (it will be hooked up within the next several days)
- You have an opportunity to listen to elders’ stories in our First Nations tent (starting in July)
- You can learn from our many information panels and displays that can be found throughout the property
- You can see our special public art piece, created by dozens of Yukoners
Entrance is by donation (suggested $3 per person) or ask about our $10 season pass that will give you and your entire family entrance to the fish ladder all summer. Hope to see you there.
